January 29 at 11:30 St. Peter's will have a potluck lunch and the important annual meeting. The 9:15 Family Service and the 11:00 Choral Eucharist will be combined at 10:30. election of vestry and convention delegates will take place as well as the 2012 budget will be discussed and passed.

Shrove Tuesday

February 21 is Shrove Tuesday and St. Peter's will have a Pancake Supper with ham, bacon and little smokies. Dinner will begin at 5:30.
We are looking for volunteers to help flip the pancakes and warm up the meat. Please contact Roberta in the church office - 747-3977 - if you can help.

St. Peter's Annual Meeting is January 29th. There will be an 8:00am Eucharist; the Family Service and 11:00 Choral Eucharist will be a combined service at 10:30am. Following Worship we will gather in the See House for a Potluck and The Meeting. We will elect new officers and pass our 2012 Budget.

Christmas Services

The Family Service Christmas Eve Service begins at 7:00pm with a Pageant. there is a music prelude beginning at 6:30 with many of the talented people at St. Peter's performing. At 10:20pm there will be a music prelude with carol singing and special music from the choir. The Eucharist service begins at 11:00.
There will NOT be regular Sunday services at St. peter's on Christmas Day. We will be celebrating a Christmas service at the Pioneers' Home at 10:30am.

Advent Lessons and Hymns

St. Peter's will be having their traditional service of Advent Lessons and Hymns at 5:30pm. This is a service of scripture readings foretelling the first and second comings of our Lord Jesus Christ. We will be singing many favorite Advent hymns in between each lesson reading.
Following the service there will be a dessert potluck and auction.

Bishop Mark's Visit to St. Peter

On May 1st Bishop Mark will be at st. Peter's. There will be an 8:00 am service, but the 9:15 and 11:00 services will be combined at 10:00. The Bishop will be doing confirmations, receptions, retirements and he will be blessing our new side chapel and columbarium. After the service there will be a festive reception in the See House.
At 5:00 pm the Bishop will ordain Glenda Rice to the Diaconate. Following the ordination there will be a parish potluck.

Holy Week Schedule and Easter

Sunday April 17-Palm Sunday.
The 9:15 and 11:00am services are combined this day. We will meet at the Crescent Harbor shelter at 10am to bless the palms and then process to the church.
Each day during Holy Week there will be Stations of the Cross at 12:05pm
On Wednesday evening at 5:30 the regular Eucharist service will be replaced by the service of Tenebrae.
Thursday evening at 5:30 the Maunday Thursday Liturgy and Holy Eucharist will take place.
On Good Friday there is a service at 5:30 with Communion from the reserved elements.

On Easter Sunday there will be a 6:00am Easter Vigil service followed by a breakfast potluck in the See House. There will NOT be an 8:00am service.
There is a Family Easter Service at 9:15 with an Easter egg hunt after and then the choral Eucharist at 11:00am

Bishop's Visit

Bishop Mark Lattime will make his first Episcopal visitation to St. Peter's Sunday, May 1, 2011. Bisoip Mark will participate in each of our worship services that day. The day will include baptisms, confirmations, an all parish potluck, and a celebrator6y tea with the Society of Sts. Simeon and Anna. 12th Night of Christmas Celebration

The 5:30 Worship Service on Wednesday January 5 will be our 12th Night of Christmas Celebration. There will the Holy Eucharist, carol singing, and a special performance by the St. Peter's Players.
Also the winner of the Jesse Tree contest will be announced.
Following the service there will be a potluck dinner with a big pan of Ginny's lasagna as the main course. Please bring a dish to round out the meal.

Safe Church Training

Rogation Sunday May 9

Thursday may 13th will be the Feast of the Ascension. Since the year 470 AD the church has marked the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday before the Ascension as Rogation Days. These are the days on which we pray for the blessings of the abundance of field, stream and sea. This year we will be marking the Rogation Days on Sunday May the 9th. If you are a gardener and have spring starts waiting to go into the ground, a fisher with a favorite lure ready to use, or practice subsistence and have a tool that you use to gather food from nature, bring one of these to church on May 9. As a portion of the service we will pray that God prosper our labor and the fruit of the earth. It is my hope that as this season of abundance begins, this blessing will help us be ever mindful of the source of all blessings.

Safe Church Training New Schedule

The Safe church Training is now scheduled for May 23 and May 24. Classes will begin at 9:30 on Sunday May 23 with a break for lunch at Noon, and then continue until 5:30PM. Training on Monday May 24 will begin at 6:30PM and close at 9:00PM. The classes will be held in the See House.

The Diocese does not keep records of those persons who have taken the training prior to 2005. On the bulletin board in the See House is a list of persons who have taken the training and the year. If you were trained prior to 2005, you must take this new training.

Safe Church Training

Safe Church Training will be at St. Peter's on Sunday May 9 from 9:30am to 5:00pm and on Monday May 10 from 6:30 to 9:00pm.
Safe Church Training is required in the Episcopal Diocese of Alaska for all who engage in ministry in the church. Examples include clergy, candidates for holy orders, lay pastors, missioners, spiritual directors, Stephen Ministers, lay Eucharist ministers, volunteers who engage in ministry in Alaska from another state, Sunday school teachers, nursery workers, child care givers, weekday teachers, mentors of youth or adults, all paid employees, all managers and supervisors, those who visit the sick and shut in regularly and others as determined by the Diocese of Alaska. All parish members age 17 and over are encouraged to attend all sessions.

BISHOP FOR THE EPISCOPAL DIOCESE OF ALASKA ELECTED
After balloting concluded at the 35th convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Alaska, the
eighth bishop of the diocese was elected. The Very Rev. Mark Lattime was elected after
delegates from around the state of Alaska prayerfully considered five candidates at their
annual convention, held April 8-11, 2010. Ninety-seven delegates met at the Meier Lake
Conference Center in Wasilla, Alaska for the electing convention.
The Very Rev. Mark Lattime was selected from amongst five final candidates. Other
candidates were:
The Rev. Virginia “Ginny” Doctor, Alaska
The Rev. Greg Kimura, Alaska
The Rev. Timothy Sexton, Hawaii
The Rev. Susan Watson, New York
The Very Rev. Lattime is Rector at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Geneseo, New
York. Since 1997 he has also served as a college chaplain. He holds a Masters of
Divinity from Bexley Hall and a Bachelors of Art from Dickinson College. A private pilot,
he is married to Lisa Lattime and has three children.
The new bishop will serve a diocese that encompasses the entire state of Alaska and
has fifty parishes and missions. The diocesan office is located in Fairbanks, Alaska.
Consent to the election must now be received from a majority of the standing
committees of the dioceses of The Episcopal Church and from the majority of the House
of Bishops.

Dream Workers Gatherings

Dream Workers:

St. Peter's Dream Catchers work of collecting the dreams that God has sent to our congregation is finished. Sunday, March 14th, they reported what they have heard from us to a special meeting of the congregation. There are six dreams that were close to our hearts and attracted significant support from you. They are presented below in the SWEEPS format (Service, Worship, Evangelism, Education, Pastoral Care, and Stewardship).

Service: (May 2)

Actively support a shelter for any homeless in Sitka, and support an evening meal for those in need. (35 votes)

Worship: (May 9)

St. Peter's develop an endowed music program with a paid Choir Director. (26 votes)

Evangelism: (May 16)

Establish a joint youth ministry with Sitka Lutheran Church for the students of Sitka High, Mt. Edgecumbe and Pacific High. (25 Votes)

Education: (May 23)

St. Peter's Wednesday School build up to a consistent enrollment and participation of 50 children from the ages of "K" through "12." (24 Votes)

Pastoral Care: (May 30)

Develop more connections between the 8:00, 9:15, and 11:00 AM worship service attendees. (21 Votes)

Stewardship: (June 6)

Plan for capital maintenance of the Church and See House. (20 Votes)

The next steps are ours (the Dream Workers). As you can see, each of these dreams was supported by a significant number of us. I invite those of you who expressed your support for these dreams to come and sit with me to discuss our next steps. These will be open discussions of possibilities and ideas for ways forward. You will see a date next to each dream heading. Please join me in the Undercroft at 10:15 AM (between services) on that Sunday to discuss the dream that you are most interested in. My prayer is that these 30 minute openers will be doors through which God will begin "new things" among us.

Palm Sunday Service at St. Peter's

There will be an 8:00am Worship service.
The 9:15 and 11:00 services will be combined on Palm Sunday. We will gather at the Crescent Harbor Shelter at 10:00 with our brothers and sisters from several churches. Our palms will be blessed and then we will have a grand procession to our respective buildings of worship.
The gathering at the harbor shelter is optional. The worship service will begin 10:30'ish'.

Episcopal Discerning Circle

Who will serve us best as Bishop?

Fr. Dave invites the members of St. Peter's to join him in a discernment circle the evening of March 24th. This evenings gathering will help inform our convention delegates as they consider who to cast their ballot for as our next Bishop. We will begin our work of listening and sharing at 6:30 PM in the Undercroft. As many of our delegates to convention (and others who have met the nominees for bishop) as possible will be present in the circle. Those who have met the nominees will be given the opportunity to share their impressions. Then we will continue in an atmosphere of prayerful dialog as we explore together what we hear the Spirit stirring in our hearts. Please come, discuss, and reflect with us that evening.

This year's Lenten reflection will be led by Glenda Rice, one of our Diocese's newest Postulants for Holy Orders. Using material from The Thoughtful Christian, she will lead us through on forgiveness using materials from Thoughtful Christian.

"Forgiveness goes to the heart of what we believe as Christians, and nothing is more important to our life together. Yet this topic is neither easy to conceptualize nor easy to practice in our life. Definitions of forgiveness vary, and personal understandings of how we ought to behave, after we are hurt or have hurt others, differ by family, religious beliefs, and cultural perspective. Unhealthy myths about faith, forgiveness, and healing can complicate this painful process, but the power of the Holy Spirit makes the impossible possible.

At the heart of the gospel is God’s gracious reconciliation with our broken world. On the cross Christ not only forgave his enemies; he embodied forgiveness. His saving work makes it possible for us to believe that we are forgiven and that we can forgive each other. This is not simply something we do every once in a while, but it is a way of life that reflects Christ..." (Thoughtful Christian)

Advent Festival of Lessons and Music

On Sunday November 29, the First Sunday of Advent, St. Peter's will have their annual Festival of Lessons and Music. There will be readings of the scriptural history of salvation from the creation to the coming of Christ interspersed with the singing of the great music of the season. The service begins at 5:30pm.
After the service there will be a dessert potluck and auction. The proceeds from the auction will go to the vestry Discretionary Fund.

All Saints Day Memorial Eucharist and Cemetery Visits

This year we will hold our All Saints Day Memorial Eucharist and cemetery visitations on Monday, November 2. This will be the feast of All Souls Day. Our Eucharist will be offered with special intention for Stephen Snapp. Steve passed away September 10th. This will be St. Peter's opportunity to offer our prayers for Steve and all the departed. The Eucharist will begin at 12:05 pm. It will be immediately followed by visitations to several of Sitka's cemeteries

Garden work party at St. Peter's Fellowship Farm

The Sitka Local Foods Network will host a "putting the garden to rest" work party from 10 am to 1pm on Saturday October 17 at St. Peter's Fellowship Farm.

The Oct. 17 work party involves a last bit of weeding, pulling out the annual plants for compost, putting mulch and protective coverings over the perennials, and getting all the tools inventoried and stored away for the winter. This will help make the garden easier to get ready for spring planting. Most of the vegetables grown at the St. Peter's Fellowship Farm are sold at the Sitka Farmers Markets during the summer.

Shepherds Wanted!

Every Sunday many of our friends and seniors gather for worship in the Pioneers' Home Chapel at 1:00pm. Our friends have the clear desire to honor the sabbath in this way. The difficulty they face is that they are not able to get to chapel without someones help. St. Peter's has a shared ministry that we call the Pioneers' Home Shepherds. Each Sunday two of our congregation calls on the members of our Pioneers' Home congregation to see if they would like to attend chapel that day. If their answer is yes, the shepherd informs the staff and helps to make certain the senior is brought to the chapel by 1:00pm. We are looking for volunteers to fill out our teams. The following are the current participants in this ministry:
1st Sunday of each month: Glenda Rice (need another team member)
2nd Sunday of each month: Ginny Wood (need another team member)
3rd Sunday of each month: Thelma Carter and Kit Allgood-Mellema
4th Sunday of each month: Judy Johnstone and Judy Ozment
5th Sunday of each month: NONE (need two team members

St. Peter's Dream Catchers

Over the past 15 years St. Peter's has engaged in two separate processes of collecting the dreams that God has inspired for our congregation. Our Biblical ancestors were familiar with divine dreams. Joseph knew that God had spoken to him in a dream about a coat of many colors. Joseph, the carpenter of Nazareth, followed the advice of an angel who came to him in a dream (twice). Paul of Tarsus answered the call of an angel who beckoned him in a dream to come to Europe to proclaim the Gospel. God has continually drawn his people to the fullness of their mission and potential through dreams. God continues to do so at St. Peter's. It is once again time to open our hearts to share the dreams God has sent to St. Peter's by-the-Sea.

Fr. Dave and your Vestry are initiating a Dream Catching process that will begin as a part of the upcoming Stewardship campaign and culminate with the sharing forth of a dream vision for our parish this coming Easter, April 4, 2010.

This process of collecting the wishes and dreams that God has sent to you will be facilitated by a Dream Catcher's committee made up of 9 lay members of our congregation. We encourage all who might be interested in serving on this committee to contact Fr. Dave, or a member of the Vestry. The Dreamers will be constituted at the September 16 meeting of the Vestry. I hope to commission the Dream Catcher's for their ministry on Sunday, September 29th; the Sunday before the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels.

Endowment Visitations

Endowment Visitations:

The Endowment Board has developed a plan to make personal visits to members of our congregation. The plan is to visit every one of us who are AARP qualified. The first intent of the visit will be to help fulfill the following responsibility placed upon your clergy by our Book of Common Prayer: "The Minister of the Congregation is directed to instruct the people, from time to time, about the duty of Christian parents to make prudent provision for the well-being of their families, and of all persons to make wills, while they are in health, arranging for the disposal of their temporal goods, not neglecting, if they are able, to leave bequests for religious and charitable uses." (BCP page 445)

The second purpose of these visits will be to invite those contacted to share their dreams for St. Peter's with the Endowment Board and the Dream Catchers Committee. These dreams will then be drawn together through the dream Catcher process and an initial vision for our endowment will be developed. I emphasize the word initial because as time and generations pass the needs of our congregation will shift. We will want to be certain that the Endowment Committee retains sufficient latitude to develop programs that respond to the current situations in the congregation and in Sitka.

Please don't be surprised when Fr. Dave or a member of the Endowment Committee contacts you to make an appointment for a cup of coffee or tea, and a conversation.

We are in the process of ordering the new St. Peter's calendars for 2010. These Christian year calendars feature a 'cover' photo. The photo is selected for it's ability to communicate something about the community at St. Peter's. this year's photo will be selected by popular vote.
If you would like to submit one of your photos to be considered please be sure and have it to Roberta by September 15. We will offer parish members the chance to pick their favorite on Sunday September 20th.

St. Peter's has been blessed by the generous sharing of the gifts and talents of our worship leaders. These include our organists, musicians, choir and directory, lay eucharistic ministers, acolytes, healing ministry, altar guild, greeters, bell rings, lectors, thurifers, deacons and priests. It is time to say thank you.

Fr./ Dave invites all the members of our worship team to a "Thank You" potluck. Fr. Dave will provide the dessert. We will gather the second Wednesday evening of September (the 9th) at 6:30pm in the See House parish hall. We will spend some time celebrating, talking about our shared ministry, and looking toward the coming year's worship offerings. Fr. Dave will also introduce the book that the worship team will be studying this school year.

If you would like to become a member of the worship team in any capacity, please join us for dinner. We will do what ever we can to get you "dialed in " to this ministry and its schedule.

Did General Convention really do THAT?

Dear Friends,
I understand that most of you have heard many things from the media about what our General Convention has done. I am also aware that many of our friends and relatives have taken what they heard and read in the news as the gospel. I believe that we would benefit from the opportunity to gather, share our reactions and questions, and then take a look at what actually took place. Please join me on the evening of August 5th to do just this. Our gathering will begin with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on this eve of the Feast of the Transfiguration. After the service we will relocate to the undercroft to engage in what I hope will be a time for our family of faith to share and inform itself.

St. Peter's Adult Christian Education 2009/10

Believe it or not it is not too soon to be thinking about our Christian Education offerings for the coming school year. The academic year will start with a five week discussion of "The Shack". The first session will be Sept. 17. This popular volume has a great deal to say about how we see the Trinity, suffering, and redemption.

"The Shack" will be followed by a six week exploration of the book titled "Listening to the Heartbeat of God." As we discuss this volume we will be introduced to several of the central tenets of Celtic Christianity. This introduction will go a long way toward explaining the unique nature of
Anglican theology, and how our church sees the world.

In January we will pick our study up again with the volume "The Lost History of Christianity". This book explores the 1,000 year flowering of Christianity in the Middle East and Asia, and its death around the year 1,000 AD. We will be introduced to the little told story of ancient Christianity in Iraq, Iran, Mongolia, and China.

Our monthly Wednesday evening group will meet each second Wednesday of the month at 7:00PM in the Undercroft. The first session will be September 9th. This year we will explore "Engaging the Word". The book is a volume in the "Episcopal Churhes Teaching Series". As we read and discuss we will be introduced to a way of reading and understanding scripture. Theses tools will help those who want to spend more time with their Bible and come away with more from their reading.
